Nagaland chief minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio has underlined the urgency of addressing unemployment in the state, stressing the need to equip local youths with practical skills to reduce dependence on non-local workers.
Responding to a starred question raised by NPP MLA Nuklutoshi during the fourth day of the eighth session of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, Rio acknowledged that while unemployment remains a serious issue, many skilled jobs continue to be filled by non-Nagas. He urged local youths to take advantage of opportunities available within the state.
Highlighting technical training initiatives, Rio said the Modern Mechanical Workshop-cum-Training Institute was functioning effectively, with several Naga youths trained to operate heavy machinery such as backhoe loaders, excavators, tandem rollers, and dump trucks. Training also covered heavy machinery mechanics and drivers.
He noted similar programmes conducted earlier by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited in Eastern Nagaland, where trained youths are now gainfully employed. Rio assured government support for additional funding to expand training.
Housing and Mechanical Engineering Minister P. Bashangmongba Chang informed the House that the institute, in collaboration with the Nagaland Skills and Entrepreneurship Development Mission and the Investment and Development Authority of Nagaland, trained 45 youths between October and December, awarding certificates upon completion.
Nuklutoshi, supplementing his query, recalled conceptualizing the institute during his tenure as Mechanical Minister, securing Rs.15 crore from the Ministry of Tribal Affairs. He admitted delays due to COVID-19 pandemic and vigilance investigations but expressed satisfaction that the institute is now operational.
He emphasized its role in reducing reliance on non-local operators for heavy machinery.
While appreciating the department’s efforts, Nuklutoshi urged the government to allocate more funds for future courses and repair damages sustained during the pandemic closure.
