Nagaland University Students’ Union (Lumami) flagged off the 27th Annual Varsity Sports Meet 2026 at the university campus today under the theme “Legacy in Motion: Focus, Execute, Triumph,” on March 11, 2026.
The opening programme began with the arrival of chief guest, Prof. Jagadish Kumar Patnaik, vice-chancellor of Nagaland University, followed by the hoisting of the flag and rendition of the university anthem. The traditional torch relay and ceremonial lighting of the sports flame marked the symbolic commencement of the meet.
The event was chaired by Kivini H. Kinimi, Women Coordinator of NUSU (L), while Hiloleh, prayer secretary of the Tenyimie Students Fellowship, led the invocation. In his welcome address, B. Liken Phom, vice president of NUSU (L), felicitated the chief guest and lauded students who represented the university at the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) sporting events. A special performance was presented by Kimennaro Pongen from the Department of Economics.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Patnaik expressed pride in the growing representation of Nagaland University students in AIU competitions, noting the steady rise in participation. He described the students as “competent, efficient and dynamic,” mentioning that they only require opportunities to showcase their talent. He further remarked that his recognition outside Nagaland was largely due to the achievements of the university’s students.
Outlining his vision, the Vice-Chancellor stressed the need for more sports galleries and infrastructural development, while acknowledging logistical challenges. He also highlighted Nagaland’s cultural richness, urging students to act as ambassadors in promoting and strengthening the state’s diverse traditions.
The oath-taking ceremony was led by M. Yeanglem Konyak, Games and Sports Secretary of NUSU (L), after which the chief guest officially declared the sports meet open. The 27th Annual Varsity Sports Meet will continue till March 14, 2026.
