Chakhesang Students’ Union (CSU) and Phek Students’ Union (PSU) have condemned the raid conducted by 39th Assam Rifles on March 12 during which the PSU general secretary was allegedly accused of factional links.
In a statement, CSU president, Povozo Soho and general secretary, Rhilo Chiero said such actions were intolerable and had deeply hurt the sentiments and dignity of the Chakhesang community.
Reiterating its long-standing stance, CSU declared its policy of “Non-Cooperation” with the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), imposed by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). It directed all affiliated and subordinate units to abstain from any association with the Indian Armed Forces operating under AFSPA.
The Union further called upon the government to repeal AFSPA without delay, stating that its continuation undermines peace, justice, and the democratic aspirations of the people of Nagaland.
Meanwhile, PSU Sherakho Venuh and assistant general secretary, Rukutho Keyho said the accusations were discriminatory and had damaged the dignity of both the individual and the citizens of Phek.
They noted that the relationship between the people of Phek and the armed forces has historically been cordial and peaceful. However, the recent actions by the newly posted battalion have undermined public trust and disturbed the harmony of the village. The Union stated that the use of force and public accusations have instilled fear among law-abiding citizens and disrupted peaceful coexistence.
The statement also opposed the enforcement of AFSPA in Phek District, calling it unnecessary and insensitive to the sentiments of the people. It emphasized that since the ceasefire agreement between factions and the Government of India, no conflict or disturbance has occurred in the area, and therefore Phek should not be considered a disturbed region. PSU urged the Government of India to reconsider and withdraw AFSPA from the district to prevent misuse and preserve the humane relationship between civilians and the armed forces.
The Union further recommended that appropriate action be taken to restore public confidence and uphold the dignity of the citizens.
