Phekmi Collegiate Forum (PCF) has strongly condemned the alleged unnecessary and humiliating frisking and harassment of one of its bona fide members, who is also the general secretary of the Phek Students’ Union, by personnel of the 39 Assam Rifles on March 12 at Phek Village.
In a condemnation note, PCF president, Veshe Chizo and general secretary Thuputo Venuh, expressed deep concern over the incident, stating that the student leader was subjected to questioning on suspicion of links with an underground faction. PCF termed the treatment as unjustified and humiliating, and asserted that student leaders working for the welfare of the community should not be subjected to intimidation without credible grounds.
The Forum pointed out the contradiction between the stated motto of the Assam Rifles—“Friends of the Hill People”—and the conduct of its personnel, stating that such actions erode public trust and damage the relationship between security forces and civilians. While acknowledging the important role of security forces in maintaining peace and stability, the Forum maintained that taking undue advantage of provisions under the AFSPA to harass innocent civilians only undermines public confidence and weakens the bond between the forces and the people.
PCF maintained that respect for civilians, especially students and youth leaders, must remain a priority, and called for fairness, professionalism and respect for human dignity in all security operations.
The Forum urged the concerned authorities of the 39 Assam Rifles to exercise greater restraint and sensitivity while dealing with civilians, and appealed to higher authorities to take note of the matter and ensure that such incidents are not repeated.
PCF affirmed its solidarity with the aggrieved individual and reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the dignity, rights and welfare of its members and the broader student community.
