National seminar charts sustainable Oilseed pathways in Northeastern region

A national seminar on “Sustainable Pathways for Scaling Oilseed Production in the Northeastern Region of India” was convened at ICAR–NRC on Mithun, Medziphema, under the aegis of ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Nagaland Centre, in collaboration with ICAR–Indian Institute of Oilseeds Research (IIOR), Hyderabad on March 14.
Delivering the keynote, chief guest and director of ICAR–IIOR, Dr. R. K. Mathur, underscored the region’s potential for location-specific oilseed crops, adoption of modern technologies, and strengthening of the oilseed value chain to enhance farmer income and regional self-sufficiency. Guest of honour, Dr. Girish Patil S., director of NRC on Mithun, highlighted challenges such as low cropping intensity and reliance on traditional methods, while advocating improved varieties, scientific crop management, and effective extension support.
Dean of CoVSc&AH, CAU, Jalukie, Dr. Shakuntala I. Devi, encouraged farmers to integrate oilseeds into their cropping systems, citing benefits for productivity, income, and nutritional security. ICAR Nagaland Centre Scientist, Dr. Harendra Verma, emphasized the favourable agro-climatic conditions of the region and urged adoption of improved varieties and efficient resource management.
The seminar featured two technical themes: Climate-Resilient Technological Innovations and Production Strategies with contributions from experts including Md. A. Aziz Qureshi, Dr. Harish Prakash Meena (ICAR–IIOR), and Dr. Mukul Deka (AAU, Jorhat); and Post-Harvest Management, Value Addition, Animal Nutrition and Oilseed Value Chain Development led by Dr. Praduman Yadav, Dr. K. Ramesh (ICAR–IIOR), Dr. Pezangulie Chakrumo (Nagaland University), Dr. Laishram Sunita Devi (NRC on Mithun), and Dr. Anuradha Chilwal (ICAR–IIGR).
Earlier, Dr. H. Kalita, Head of ICAR Nagaland Centre, delivered the welcome address, while Dr. Harendra Verma proposed the vote of thanks. The seminar witnessed participation of 150 delegates, including 50 farmers. Inputs such as khurpis and other essentials were distributed to support improved oilseed cultivation, followed by a field visit to farmers’ fields.
