The 47th edition of the Mesulumi Wrestling Association (Mewunye) was held on March 14 at Mesulumi village, Phek district, under the theme “Stewardship Towards Our Cultural Identity.”
The wrestling competition, administered by Technical Lhipelo Tsido, featured six age categories ranging from 9–10 years to 19 and above. In the senior-most category, Medoto Puro emerged champion, followed by Rhiku Thele (first runner-up), Wezütsho Venuh (second runner-up), and Wewute Thele (fourth place). The programme, chaired by media secretary Dr. Dingupe Lasuh, began with an invocation by Pastor. Medochü Vadeo of MBC. Association president Tewetso Tsüha delivered the welcome address, followed by acknowledgements led by general secretary Lonyi Puro. Guest speaker Ape Puro, a fitness instructor and entrepreneur, spoke on the importance of fitness through proper diet, hygiene, and organic food. He emphasized that rural lifestyles are healthier than urban ones, and urged wrestlers to practice self-discipline for success. He also highlighted the cultural significance of Mewunye, a festival celebrated since ancient times, symbolizing growth and vitality among youth.
The event was graced by several former wrestlers, including Zacüta Puro, member of the Nagaland Wrestling Referee Board. An exhibition match between Kuvene Puro and Theputha Hesuh entertained the crowd, while fitness athletes Vekutho Nyekha and Visa Zashümo showcased their physiques. Notable attendees included Huluyi D. Vadeo, reigning champion of Secheku Wrestling Association, and Kütho Puro, under-15 third position holder at Naga Wrestling 2026.
Treasurer Kolo Thele distributed prizes, and the programme concluded with the de-hoisting of the Association flag and a benediction by associate pastor Keletsho Chiero. The Association expressed gratitude to the guest speaker, well-wishers, neighboring villages, Village Council, GBs, MYS, prize sponsors and the Mesulumi public for their support in making the event a grand success.
