The North East India Christian Council has appointed Rev. Dr. Meyu Changkiri as its general secretary for 2026–2030, making him the first Naga to hold the post on a full-time basis since the council’s formation in 1937.
Rev Dr Changkiri currently serves as pastor of Ao Baptist Arogo, Shillong, where he has ministered for 18 years. He is also chairman of the board of governors of Clark Theological College, Aolijen, Mokokchung, a member of the NEICC Trust Management Committee, and treasurer of Serving in Mission (North East India).
He will be formally installed during the 5th biennial assembly to be hosted by the Garo Baptist Convention at Resubelpara near Tura, Meghalaya, from May 21–24, 2026. The formal handing over of charge is scheduled for July 1. NEICC, which traces its origin to the Assam Christian Council formed in 1937, promotes Christian fellowship and cooperation across the Northeast and is also involved in education and peace initiatives. The council established Union Christian College, Barapani, in 1952 and later UCC Higher Secondary School in 2016, besides running a Peace Centre focusing on research and reconciliation. NEICC comprises 37 member churches and 18 associate units and is affiliated to the National Council of Churches in India.
