Multi-cornered contest setfor Koridang by-poll on April 9

KOHIMA/DIMAPUR, MAR 21 (IANS/NPN):

A multi-cornered contest is set to emerge in the April 9 by-election to the 28-Koridang Assembly constituency in Mokokchung district, with major political parties and independent candidates entering the fray.
After the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ally National People’s Party (NPP) announced their candidates, the Congress on Saturday declared T. Chalukumba Ao as its nominee. The candidature was approved by party president Mallikarjun Kharge, according to Congress general secretary (Organisation) K.C. Venugopal. The by-election was necessitated following the demise of sitting MLA Imkong L. Imchen on November 11, 2025. The BJP has fielded Daochier I. Imchen, son of the late Imkong L Imchen, while the NPP has nominated I. Abenjang.
In addition, Imtiwapang has announced his candidature as an Independent, while former NPF Central Youth Wing president Imchatoba Imchen and former NPF candidate Maj. Toshikaba (Retd) are also in the fray, making it a keenly contested election. In the 2023 Assembly elections, Maj. (Retd) Toshikaba had contested as NPF candidate but lost to BJP candidate Imkong L. Imchen by a narrow margin of 276 votes.
According to a notification issued by the election authorities in Nagaland, the filing of nominations began on March 16, while the last date for submission is March 23. Scrutiny of nominations will take place on March 24, and the final date for withdrawal of candidatures is March 26.
A total of 22,390 voters, including 11,013 women, are eligible to vote in the Koridang Assembly constituency.
