St. Joseph University (SJU) kicked started its much-awaited Varsity Sports Week 2026 on Wednesday at the SJU Ground under the theme “Ignite the Athlete Within.” The opening ceremony witnessed spirited participation from students, faculty members and distinguished guests.
The programme began with the unfurling of the national flag by Deputy Commander, 6 Sector Assam Rifles, Colonel Rajarshi Das, followed by the hoisting of the University flag by Vice-Chancellor Dr. D. Gnanadurai. The invocation was led by PRO, SJU, Rev. Fr. L. Anish, while the SJU Anthem was presented by the Music Club.
In his keynote address, Colonel Das emphasized the importance of holistic development beyond academics. He urged students to view themselves as future nation-builders, highlighting that education, sports and resilience are vital tools for reducing inequality and strengthening society. He reminded students that nation-building begins not only in Parliament but also in classrooms, farms, laboratories, startups, and sports fields.
President of the Students’ Council, Gobind Pradhan, delivered the welcome address, and Prof. Charles Mhonthung Ezung, Dean of Student Affairs, encouraged students to uphold unity and sportsmanship. A special appearance by Wekupe Therie added vibrancy to the occasion. Appreciation certificates and mementos were presented by Controller of Examinations, Dr. Thiyagarajan, recognizing contributions to the event.
The oath-taking ceremony was administered by Games and Sports Secretary, Mukom Khiamniungan, affirming the spirit of fair play. This was followed by the ceremonial lighting of the torch, symbolizing unity and officially marking the commencement of the sports week. The special guest then declared the Varsity Sports Week 2026 open.
The programme concluded with a benediction by Assistant Campus Manager SJU, Rev. Fr. Martin Jacques, and an exhibition match between the Students’ Council and SJU Faculty (Men).
The Varsity Sports Week will continue until March 27, featuring a range of sporting events designed to foster teamwork, discipline, resilience and sportsmanship among students.
