IB alert: Fake Iran war charities exploit emotional appeals

The Union Home Ministry has issued an advisory on radicalisation risks linked to the war in Iran, and the Intelligence Bureau has alerted against a charity scam.

Officials report groups collecting donations in the name of helping Iran, using altered war images and emotional appeals. Similar scams were seen during the Israel-Palestine conflict. In Jammu and Kashmir, the scale is highest, with door-to-door collections amounting to around ₹16 crore, including money, gold, and utensils.

Authorities found the same networks previously raised funds for separatist groups before Article 370’s abrogation. The target has mainly been the Shia community, with appeals made offline to avoid detection. Fake receipts are issued, claiming funds will be sent to Iran.

Agencies warn that while some money is used for personal gain, a significant portion may support anti-national activities, including attempts to revive separatist movements in Jammu and Kashmir. Monitoring continues across other parts of the country.
