The state capital Kohima plunged into darkness early Saturday morning following a major power outage, leaving large parts of the city without electricity and experiencing low voltage even during intermittent restoration.
In a press release, transmission division Kohima executive engineer Namheu Khate Zeliang informed that blackout occurred at around 7:42 am on March 28, 2026.
The outage was attributed to damage to the 132 kV Dimapur-Kohima transmission line, which reportedly snapped at Kuda Village due to inclement weather conditions.
The department informed that power supply to Kohima was normally sourced from three feeding points—Dimapur, Doyang and Karong in Manipur. However, all three lines were not fully operational at the time of the incident.
It was stated that power supply from Doyang generation station remained completely disrupted following the collapse of a transmission tower at Longsa Village under Wokha district, with restoration work currently underway. In addition, supply from the Manipur side was unavailable due to failure of station equipment at the 132/33 kV Yurembam sub-station.
In view of these disruptions, the department stated that power supply to Kohima district was presently dependent solely on the 220/132 kV Power Grid sub-station at Nargajan, Dimapur, which had also been affected due to the snapped transmission line.
Meanwhile, power supply was restored in the evening at around 7:40 pm after prolonged outage throughout the day.
The department informed that efforts were being made on a war footing to restore the damaged transmission infrastructure at the earliest.
It expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to consumers and assured that all necessary measures were being taken to normalize power supply.
