Cleanliness drive to make Aizawl ‘garbage-free’

A mass cleanliness drive was held across Aizawl on Saturday to make the Mizoram capital one of the cleanest cities in the country.
The initiative, organised by the Coordination Committee for Aizawl City Cleanliness, was a joint effort of the state Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation (UD&PA) Department, Aizawl Smart City Ltd, Aizawl Municipal Corporation and the Central Young Mizo Association (CYMA). UD&PA Secretary Lalmalsawma Pachuau flagged off the drive in front of Vanapa Hall.
Addressing the gathering, Pachuau stressed that maintaining cleanliness is an important aspect of patriotism and urged people to take collective responsibility for preserving and maintaining their surroundings.
He also described cleanliness as an economic asset that enhances the state’s appeal and serves as a major attraction for tourists.
Officials said the campaign witnessed wide participation from government departments and various YMA branches.
As part of the drive, organisers identified 15 high-priority garbage “black spots” marked by heavy waste accumulation. YMA branches located near these sites carried out special community cleaning activities.
Several local YMA units also undertook cleanliness drives in their respective neighbourhoods on Saturday, while some branches conducted similar activities on Friday, officials said.
The campaign forms a key component of the Comprehensive Plan for Municipal Solid Waste Management in Aizawl, which aims to transform the state capital into a garbage-free city and one of the cleanest urban centres in the country, they said.
