Kohima Sumi Students’ Union (KSSU) held its 2nd Annual Sports Day on March 28 at TM Ground, Kohima, under the theme “Building Bonds through Games.”
Gracing the occasion as chief guest, MLA of 9th Kohima Town Assembly Constituency, Dr. Tseilhoutuo (Ato) Rhutso, termed the theme timely and relevant, noting that sports serve as a powerful medium to foster unity not only among players but also spectators by promoting understanding and friendship.
Addressing the students, Dr. Rhutso acknowledged the sacrifices of parents in supporting education and urged youth to strive for excellence. Highlighting challenges in Naga society, he pointed to tribalism as a major concern and urged advanced tribes to lead in overcoming divisions. He also expressed concern over excessive election expenditure, stating that capable individuals are discouraged from contesting due to the perception that leadership is tied to wealth. Calling for change, he urged youngsters to elect leaders based on merit rather than financial status.
Referring to the recently concluded 8th Session of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly, Dr. Rhutso noted that chief minister, Dr. Neiphiu Rio had allocated Rs. 20 lakh for each Assembly constituency to promote entrepreneurship and skill development, urging youth to actively participate in training and workshops under such initiatives.
Earlier, the programme began with a welcome address by KSSU president Akito Zhimomi, followed by oath-taking administered by Games and Sports Secretary Ghuvito Achumi. Invocation was offered by Lujeka Kinimi, Associate Youth Pastor (SBCK), while a special song was presented by Aloli Achumi. Students competed in football, volleyball, spear kicking and other events.
