Village councils warned on violation of MCC in Koridang bypoll

DIMAPUR, APR 1 (NPN):

Deputy Commissioner & District Election Officer Mokokchung, Ajit Kumar Verma, has directed all village councils under Mokokchung district to strictly comply with the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) in view of the ensuing bye-election to the 28-Koridang Assembly Constituency.
In an order dated April 1, 2026, the DC informed that MCC has been enforced across the district from the date of announcement of the bye-election till completion of the election process.
Further, it noted that certain village councils and local authorities were found engaging in political campaigning, partisan activities, imposing restrictions on free movement and issuing prohibitory orders, which are in violation of Model Code of Conduc.
Citing Section 15 of the Nagaland Village & Tribal Councils Act, 1978, the DC reminded that village councils are auxiliary bodies to the district administration, responsible for maintaining law and order and required to abide by instructions issued by competent authorities.
Accordingly, all village councils, particularly those under the jurisdiction of Koridang Assembly Constituency, have been directed to ensure strict compliance with Model Code of Conduc, instructions issued by competent authorities and other legal provisions within their jurisdiction.
The DC warned that any village council member found violating the directive would be liable for action under the Nagaland Village & Tribal Councils Act, 1978 and other relevant laws.
