NPYF appeals against refusal of Rs.10 and Rs.20 coins

National People’s Youth Front (NPYF), Dimapur District, has raised serious concern over the widespread refusal to accept Rs.10 and Rs. 20 denomination coins by shopkeepers, vendors, and sections of the public across the district.
Despite repeated clarifications from Reserve Bank of India that these coins are valid legal tender, their non-acceptance continues, causing inconvenience to citizens and disrupting daily transactions.
NPYF Dimapur district president, Zato Sumi emphasized that the issue was not merely one of inconvenience but carries wider economic implications. Coins brought into Nagaland from outside remain unused or are forced to be spent elsewhere, leading to financial loss and weakening local currency circulation. “This directly puts our state economy down,” he said, adding that if left unchecked, the practice will erode public confidence in the monetary system and harm the local economy.
NPYF urged DC Dimapur to issue strict directives to all commercial establishments to accept Rs.10 and Rs.20 coins; take legal action against violators refusing valid currency and direct enforcement agencies to ensure compliance across the district.
