As the headline states, there is no uniformity in private tuition fee structure in Dimapur. While we certainly acknowledge teachers and tutors for their noble dedication to education, it is evident that some are taking advantage of local shortages by charging unreasonable rates.
Because not all tutors are certified school teachers—many are independent professionals without institutional affiliations—one might expect a difference in pricing. However, these varying backgrounds do not justify the imposition of exorbitant tuition fees. Parents who wants the best for their child agress to such high rates despite the financial struggle. While it is a different story if the parents offers high rates voluntarily, the lack of standardized fee structure in Dimapur remains a significant burden.
The Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) has previously attempted to implement standardized fee structure for various standards and categories. However, many parents continue to remain unaware of these regulations, highlighting the urgent need for wider public awareness.
In light of the shifting economic landscape and the rising cost of living in Dimapur, there is a growing appeal for the concerned student bodies to intervene and strictly regularize the private tuition fee structure. By updating these rates, the student community will be seen to ensure a fair balance that compensates tutors reasonably while protecting families from arbitrary price hikes. Such a move is seen as essential to maintaining the quality and accessibility of supplemental education, ensuring that academic support remains a sustainable resource for all.
Another concerning trend seen in the recent years is the increasing commercialization of education. Private tuition is now frequently viewed as a mandatory requirement more than ever rather than a supplemental aid. This shift has undoubtedly led to a culture where extra tuitions are prioritized over regular classroom instruction. Consequently, some students feel it is acceptable to miss days of school, assuming their private tutors will cover the deficit.
Parents must remember that their children are being taught by qualified professionals in school classrooms for whom they are paying a considerable amount of money. They should remain confident that the school they have chosen to enroll their children is doing a good job of delivering an all-around, quality education without compromise. Students can, and should, be able to rely on their school teachers without the constant need for supplementary classes. While opting for private tuition remains a personal choice based on necessity, it should never replace the foundational role of formal schooling.
It is time we bring transparency and fairness to the tuition system in Dimapur to ensure education remains accessible and balanced for everyone.
