Awareness on Smart Metering held at Pughoboto

A sensitisation and awareness programme on Smart Metering under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) was held at the ADC’s Conference Hall, Pughoboto, on April 9, 2026.
According to DIPR report, the meeting provided key clarifications regarding the implementation of smart meters in the subdivision.
Chairing the programme, SDO (Civil) Yithachu Thur said the initiative was essential to address Nagaland’s power challenges, including energy deficit, weak infrastructure and poor revenue collection. He underlined smart metering as a vital component of RDSS for power sector reforms.
Responding to objections raised by GBs of Pughoboto Adhoc Town, the SDO Power (III), Kohima Division, clarified that RDSS comprises two components—smart metering and infrastructure upgradation. He emphasised that Pughoboto, being an administrative headquarters, is mandated to install smart meters for all consumers, including government offices and quarters.
Executive Engineer, Er. Sheludi Longkumer, presented details of the scheme, addressing misconceptions and assuring stakeholders of the system’s reliability, transparency and accuracy. It was highlighted that installation of smart meters will be free of cost until 2028. Consumers will have the option of prepaid or postpaid billing, with prepaid systems offering lower tariffs and a Rs.300 credit facility even after balance exhaustion, preventing immediate disconnection.
The meeting also resolved to post a Billing Assistant at the Pughoboto office to assist consumers with online payments. Concluding the programme, the chair urged public cooperation in adopting smart metering to enable faster infrastructure improvements such as transformers and street lighting.
