Nagaland adopts online vital records system

The 13th State Level Inter Departmental Coordination Committee (SLIDCC) meeting on Registration of Births and Deaths in Nagaland has resolved to discontinue manual registration and ensure all vital events are recorded online through the CRS ORGI portal.
According to DIPR report, the cutoff date for cessation of manual certificates will be finalized by the department. This transition aims to enhance data accuracy, reliability, and real-time reporting while eliminating fraudulent practices.
The meeting, held at the Chief Secretary Conference Hall, Nagaland Civil Secretariat, Kohima, was chaired by Chief Secretary Sentiyanger Imchen. Secretary, Economics & Statistics and Chief Registrar of Births & Deaths, Akunu S. Meyase, highlighted the current status of registration in the state and informed that the constitution of the committee had been re-notified to strengthen implementation as per ORGI instructions. The Chief Secretary stressed that teachers should not bear the primary responsibility for registration and suggested entrusting the task to Village Councils in rural areas and nurses in medical institutions. Sensitization and training will be imparted to the newly appointed registrars, while both teachers and Village Councils will perform registration duties simultaneously during the transition period to ensure continuity. On digitization of legacy records, it was informed that a recent special drive had digitized 9,439 old certificates. Members suggested similar campaigns across selected offices, with DES coordinating awareness through DIPR and AIR. Strengthening institutional reporting was also emphasized, with the Health & Family Welfare department directed to onboard nominated nurses from all government medical institutions to the CRS portal and ensure mandatory reporting of births and deaths, including Medical Certification of Cause of Death. Currently, only Kohima, Dimapur and Tuensang report such data.
The committee agreed to update the registration hierarchy constituted in 2011, removing obsolete roles and aligning with current operational requirements. Akunu S. Meyase further informed about the introduction of Baal Aadhaar for children aged 0–5 years at the Directorate in Kohima, with plans to expand to all district offices.
