The fifth edition of the Inter-District Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) and Government High School (GHS) Tournament began on Tuesday at the Imkongmeren Sports Complex, Mokokchung, with MLA and advisor, School Education and SCERT, Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, gracing the inaugural programme as the special guest.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Yhome underscored the importance of such tournaments, noting that they provide athletes with opportunities to progress to the national level. He remarked that sports are poised to become the biggest industry in the future and emphasized the need to nurture young talent through structured competitions.
The advisor also highlighted the role of physical education teachers, suggesting that they be integrated into the youth resource department for better professional training and wider coverage. He explained that currently, physical education teachers are confined to individual schools, but under the proposed arrangement, they could serve across government, private, and central schools, thereby strengthening the professional training of children.
Dr. Yhome further revealed that a new Nagaland School Sports Policy is being formulated, which will soon be adopted as a state policy to provide a comprehensive framework for sports development in schools.
The three-day tournament is being hosted by Mokokchung district and features participation from 17 districts. Events include Sepaktakraw, badminton, volleyball and track and field disciplines.
