A premature baby girl was reportedly found dead in the Vekhvürojü river, located between Airfield Colony and Humtso village in Wokha, on April 14.
The body was discovered by frog hunters, who spotted the infant floating in the river while collecting frogs. The incident was reported to Wokha Police Station by EAC Wokha, Sangmou Khiamniungan, at around 6:40 p.m.
Additional Superintendent of Police, Wokha, Biren Lotha, informed that the body was retrieved later the same night by police personnel. A post-mortem examination was conducted on April 15 at District Hospital Wokha in the presence of Child Welfare Committee (CWC) members and women police officers. Medical findings estimated the infant’s gestational age to be around seven months.
Police have registered a case of Unnatural Death (UD), and an investigation is currently underway. However, the person responsible for the incident has not yet been identified, and no arrests have been made so far.
Authorities stated that all relevant departments and organisations have been involved in the process. The infant was later named and laid to rest at the Wokha town graveyard. The burial was carried out with the approval of the district administration and in the presence of a magistrate, CWC members, and church workers, who ensured that a proper funeral service was conducted.
