Centre plans Rs 2,183cr river scheme with NE focus

The Centre has proposed continuation of the river basin management scheme under the 16th Finance Commission period (2026-27 to 2030-31) with an outlay of Rs 2,183 crore, with major focus on the North Eastern region.
The scheme targets key river systems such as the Brahmaputra River, Barak River and Teesta River, aiming at sustainable water use, flood control, irrigation and hydropower development. It prioritises water-rich but underdeveloped basins in states including Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Sikkim.
The programme seeks to address capacity gaps through surveys, investigations and preparation of detailed project reports, especially in difficult terrains. It also includes flood management, anti-erosion measures and protection of vulnerable areas like Majuli Island.
Modern technologies such as GIS, remote sensing, LiDAR and drone surveys will support planning, alongside community-based interventions like springshed management in hilly and tribal areas.
