U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday that American envoys would return to Pakistan for fresh talks with Iran, while threatening new attacks on Iranian bridges and power plants if Tehran does not accept U.S. terms.
Trump said the U.S. delegation would arrive on Monday evening, leaving little time for progress before a two-week ceasefire expires. “We’re offering a very fair and reasonable deal, and I hope they take it because, if they don’t, the United States is going to knock out every single power plant, and every single bridge, in Iran,” he posted on social media, adding, “No more Mr. Nice Guy!” There was no immediate confirmation from Iran on participation in the talks. Tasnim News Agency reported that no decision had been taken to send a delegation while a U.S. blockade of Iranian ports remained in place.
A White House official said the U.S. delegation would be led by Vice President JD Vance, who had headed earlier peace talks, and would include envoy Steve Kushner and Jared Kushner. Trump had earlier indicated that Vance might not attend. Iran’s chief negotiator Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said both sides had made some progress but remained far apart on nuclear issues and the status of the Strait of Hormuz. The key shipping route remained closed on Sunday after Iran fired on two vessels attempting to cross. Iran had earlier said it would reopen the strait but reversed the decision after Trump declined to lift the blockade on its ports.
Trump described the firing as a violation of the ceasefire, saying Iran had “decided to fire bullets” in the strait. His renewed threats to strike infrastructure follow a pattern seen during the conflict, where strong warnings were often followed by attempts at de-escalation, including the sudden ceasefire announcement two weeks ago. Iran has warned that any U.S. attack on its civilian infrastructure would prompt retaliation against power stations and desalination plants in Gulf Arab countries.
