Manipur Police have arrested 20 individuals in a sweeping two-day crackdown targeting curfew violations and the spread of inflammatory content on social media, officials confirmed on Monday.
The coordinated operation, carried out across Imphal and surrounding areas, comes amid continuing ethnic tensions in Manipur. Authorities say the arrests are part of intensified efforts to restore law and order and prevent further escalation of unrest.
Among those detained is 29-year-old Laishram Ajit Kumar Singh, a resident of Motbung Mamang Leikai, who was reportedly staying at a relief camp in Lamboi Khongnangkhong. Police allege that Singh operated a Facebook account under the name “L. Ajit Singh,” which was used to post threats and incite violence. Investigators are currently examining the reach and potential impact of the content he shared online.
The cyber-related arrest follows a large-scale ground operation conducted on April 19, during which 19 individuals were apprehended for violating curfew orders. According to officials, those detained were involved in blocking key roads and damaging public property during a period of heightened tension.
A police spokesperson reiterated the administration’s zero-tolerance stance, warning that any attempts to disturb public peace-whether through physical acts or digital platforms-would invite strict legal action.
Manipur has witnessed recurring episodes of inter-community clashes in recent months, prompting the imposition of curfews and increased security deployment. Authorities have urged citizens to exercise restraint, refrain from spreading provocative content, and report any suspicious online activity to law enforcement agencies.
