Nepal Home Minister Resigns Amid Financial Controversy

Nepal’s Home Minister Sudan Gurung resigned on Wednesday following mounting controversy over his financial dealings and alleged business links with businessman Deepak Bhatta, who is in police custody on money laundering charges. Gurung, a prominent Gen-Z political figure, announced his decision via social media, stating he wanted to ensure an impartial investigation and uphold public trust. His resignation marks the second Cabinet exit in less than a month under Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s new government, which came to power in March with a mandate to curb corruption.

The controversy deepened after Gurung disclosed property details showing significant wealth, including land holdings beyond legal limits and investments in a micro-insurance company linked to Bhatta. His defense of wealth accumulation before joining government drew criticism, fueling questions about transparency. Earlier this month, Labour Minister Deepak Kumar Sah was sacked for misuse of office, underscoring the government’s anti-corruption drive. Gurung, elected from Gorkha-1 constituency, leaves office amid heightened scrutiny of ministers’ financial integrity.
