KU endorses road works, warns over Oting park deadlock

A meeting involving the Konyak Union (Naginimora and Tizit units), landowners and stakeholders endorsed the proposed National Highway development along stretches of the Foothills Road in Mon district, subject to compensation for additional land as per NH Act norms.
The meeting deliberated on ongoing road development in Tizit, Tekun, Upper and Lower Tiru, and Naginimora belt, and expressed strong resentment over poor quality of work and slow progress. KU pointed out that key components, including the RCC bridge at chainage 16, remain incomplete. It stated that despite over a year since commencement, the road has not become pliable, causing inconvenience to commuters and local residents. It recalled that these concerns were earlier raised during a meeting with the State government in Kohima on April 7, 2026, and urged that construction be expedited at the earliest.
Oting park row: On the issue of the 2021 Oting massacre martyrs’ park in Mon town, the Konyak Union said the project has been stalled due to objections raised by 42 Assam Rifles, despite the state government having already allotted the site. A meeting held on April 21 with Assam Rifles officials, including IGAR (N), DIG 7 Sector, and commanding officer of 42 AR, failed to reach a resolution, with both sides remaining firm on their positions.
KU said it had submitted detailed representations to the State government since February 2026 seeking intervention but alleged that no official response had been received so far, terming it a serious lapse and lack of concern for the community. It questioned the government’s priorities, stating that the issue carried long-term significance for public sentiment and safety.
The Konyak Union urged the government to expedite resolution of the matter to avoid any escalation. It also warned that it would proceed with construction of the martyrs’ park and stated that if any untoward incident arises, the Union would not be held responsible.
