Nagaland prepares for NEPEx 2026 quake drill

In preparation for the upcoming state-level mock exercise under the 8th edition of the Nagaland Emergency Preparedness Exercise (NEPEx), district administrations across Nagaland conducted virtual capacity-building programmes and coordination meetings on April 22, 2026.
According to DIPR report, at Kohima, Deputy Commissioner and chairman DDMA, B. Henok Buchem, along with Superintendent of Police Krodi Rhetso and officials from various departments, participated in a state-level video conference from the DC’s office. The mock exercise scheduled for April 30 will simulate a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake, testing emergency response systems against large-scale infrastructure damage, fire outbreaks, landslides and critical installation failures. Hospitals, relief camps and Incident Response System (IRS) mechanisms will be activated, with SEOC and DEOCs overseeing coordination.
In Dimapur, a virtual programme was held at the NIC Video Conference Hall, chaired by Major General (Retd.) Sudhir Bahl, consultant NDMA. He delivered a presentation on roles and responsibilities of line departments during disasters, stressing preparedness, coordination and technology integration, including the Google Android Earthquake Alert System. Additional Deputy Commissioner Dr. Diana Patton appreciated the session and urged departments to remain fully prepared for the upcoming exercise.
At Chumoukedima, a state-level coordinating conference was held at the DC’s office. Deputy Commissioner Polan John, informed that a Tabletop Exercise would be conducted on April 29, followed by a full-scale mock drill on April 30. He emphasized collective responsibility under the Incident Response System (IRS) framework, noting that all departments contribute through manpower, technical expertise and resources. The DC cautioned that the simulated earthquake scenario would be of much higher magnitude than recent tremors, potentially damaging critical infrastructure and communication networks.
In Longleng, DC and chairman DDMA, W. Manpai Phom, chaired the VC orientation and coordination meeting at the DPDB hall. He urged IRS members to attend the Tabletop Exercise scheduled for April 29.
Organised by the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Home Department, the NEPEx 2026 exercise aims to strengthen disaster response mechanisms, inter-agency coordination and preparedness across the state.
