Cop among two arrested during Manipur protests

Correspondent

Manipur police arrested two individuals, including one of their own personnel, during a crackdown on violent protest activities in Imphal East district. The arrested constable was identified as Thoudam Gojendro Singh, while the other detainee was Pukhrambam Imo Chinglemba, both residents of Tingri Makha Leikai.
According to official sources, the duo was apprehended on Tuesday at Koirengei Crossing along NH-02 while allegedly burning debris on the road and targeting security forces with slingshots and stones. Singh was reportedly participating in the protest in plain clothes. Police have registered a case and initiated further investigation to determine the circumstances and possible involvement of others. The arrests come amid ongoing unrest in Manipur, where protests have intensified following the killing of two minor siblings in an RPG attack in Bishnupur’s Tronglaobi village on April 7, and the subsequent death of three civilians in CRPF firing. Demonstrations, including road blockades and torch rallies, have continued across the five valley districts.
Police sources revealed that at least 42 individuals have been arrested in recent days for engaging in violent activities under the guise of protests. Authorities also detained two persons, including an internally displaced person (IDP) from a relief camp, for allegedly posting inflammatory content on social media that threatened public order.
