ICC Hails LA28 Cricket Stadium Groundbreaking

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has welcomed the start of construction of a cricket stadium at Pomona in Los Angeles County, marking a major milestone ahead of the sport’s historic return to the Olympics at LA28 after 128 years. ICC Chairman Jay Shah described the groundbreaking ceremony at Fairplex Grounds as a proud moment for cricket’s 2.5 billion fans worldwide, saying the venue will take centre-stage during the Games and leave a lasting legacy for the sport in the USA.

ICC Chief Executive Sanjog Gupta emphasized that cricket’s inclusion in the Olympics signals a new era of global growth, with improved accessibility, visibility, and institutional support. The LA28 stadium project is expected to inspire youth participation and expand cricket’s footprint in the Americas. Officials noted that the T20I format will feature for both men’s and women’s competitions, helping bridge the gap between traditional powerhouses and emerging teams. The event was attended by dignitaries including LA28 Vice President Niccolo Campriani, Pomona Mayor Tim Sandoval, and Knight Riders Sports CEO Venky Mysore.
