As Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE) announced the results for the HSLC and HSSLC examinations 2026 on Thursday, the toppers of HSLC and HSSLC shared insights into their rigorous preparation, future aspirations, and the discipline required to achieve academic excellence.
HSLC topper: Speaking to Nagaland Post over phone, Aman Kumar (16) of M.G.M. Higher Secondary School, Dimapur, who secured the top position in the HSLC examination with 590 marks (98.33%), expressed surprise at the result and admitted he expected a top-five finish but was overwhelmed to be ranked first.
Kumar said his preparation involved five to seven hours of daily study beginning in January. He opined that students should focus on understanding their lessons instead of just memorizing them. Crediting his parents and teachers for their guidance, Kumar said he plans to pursue Science in Nagaland with the ultimate goal of becoming a neurosurgeon.
He advised students to stay consistent, focus on concepts, and not be discouraged by setbacks, as success comes with dedication and perseverance.
HSSLC science topper: Menguhaankum Chang (18) of St. John Higher Secondary Residential School, Dimapur, who secured Rank 1 with 95.60% (478 marks), attributed his success to God, along with the unwavering support of his parents, teachers, warden and friends.
He highlighted the role of discipline, especially the school’s strict no-phone policy, in helping him stay focused.
Chang admitted that he was not very serious when the academic year began, but later increased his study time to 12-14 hours daily to master challenging subjects like Biology.
Having already cleared the JEE Main, he is currently preparing for JEE Advanced to fulfil his dream of becoming an aeronautical engineer. He advised peers to surround themselves with a competitive circle and maintain a positive mindset.
HSSLC commerce topper: Shreya Debnath (19) of Pranab Vidyapith Higher Secondary School, Dimapur, who secured the top position with 480 marks (96.00%), said she was happy with her performance, though she did not expect to achieve top position.
She credited her success to consistent daily study without following a strict schedule and emphasized that self-discipline was key.
Overcoming self-imposed pressure through prayer, Shreya Debnath said she managed her preparation effectively by studying 6-7 hours daily and limiting distractions like social media.
Shreya Debnath, who was HSLC Rank 16 holder, aspires to pursue B.Com and become a banker.
She advised students to stay consistent, avoid unnecessary pressure, and balance studies with enjoyment.
HSSLC arts topper: Keleno Thorie of Northfield School, Khikha under Kohima district, attributed her achievement to consistent effort, family support, and lessons learned from past academic experiences.
Keleno, who secured one of the top positions in HSLC examination, said she focused specifically on enhancing her writing skills, prioritizing key subject areas and taking important notes.
Rather than following a rigid timetable, she adopted a flexible routine, studying whenever possible while ensuring total concentration during those periods.
To manage stress, Keleno shared that she balanced her academics with leisure, regularly using social media and watching movies to refresh her mind.
The topper hails from a family of high achievers; her three elder sisters also secured top positions in their respective examinations. She also expressed gratitude to her friends for their motivation and support during challenging times in class.
Keleno intends to pursue an Honours degree in History, with aspirations to enter the Civil Services.
