The Mizoram government has stepped up its fight against cross-border drug networks, convening the 12th State-Level NCORD (Narco Coordination Centre) meeting to review enforcement and coordination measures. Chaired by Chief Secretary Khilli Ram Meena, the meeting brought together senior officials, police chiefs from all 11 districts, and representatives from agencies including the Narcotics Control Bureau, Assam Rifles, BSF, and Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau. Officials discussed progress since the last meeting, introduced a Standard Operating Procedure for declaring drug-free villages, and aligned state strategies with national priorities set during the 9th Apex-Level NCORD meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Mizoram’s vulnerability stems from its 510-km unfenced border with Myanmar and 318-km porous frontier with Bangladesh, making it a hotspot for narcotics smuggling. Drugs, arms, wildlife, and contraband often flow through districts such as Champhai, Siaha, and Lawngtlai, with methamphetamine tablets known as Yaba among the most trafficked substances. Authorities stressed the need for a whole-of-government approach to dismantle cartels, tackle darknet-based trafficking, and prevent misuse of precursor chemicals, underscoring Mizoram’s role in the national campaign against narcotics.
