India is gearing up for the rollout of 6G services, with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) extending the validity of the crucial 600 MHz band to strengthen spectrum availability and improve network efficiency, TRAI Chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti said Friday. He noted that the regulator has also recommended inter-band spectrum sharing, surplus spectrum leasing, and active infrastructure sharing among operators to enhance optimal utilisation of resources.
Lahoti highlighted that mobile networks alone may not be sufficient to meet surging data demand, especially with the rapid expansion of AI use cases. He pointed to India’s record addition of 17 million fixed broadband users in 2025-26 and stressed the need for hybrid connectivity models combining fibre and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA). Indoor connectivity remains a challenge, he said, adding that TRAI’s recommendations for integrating digital infrastructure at the building design stage have been accepted by the government.
