The NNC/FGN, under the leadership of Zhopra Vero, has expressed strong opposition to the proposal by the Indian Air Force (IAF) to establish a Mountain Radar System at Pfutsero under Chakhesang region.
In a statement, Vepozo Chuzho, rali wali kilonser said the proposal was unacceptable to the Naga people and alleged that it was undertaken without consultation. It stated that the Naga people have been resisting militarization of their land and termed the move as undermining Naga sovereignty.
NNC/FGN alleged that policies of the government of India and its armed forces have resulted in atrocities under the pretext of development, law and order and security. It also claimed that such actions contradict commitments to resolve the Indo-Naga political issue through democratic means.
It further asserted that, instead of resolving the Indo-Naga political issue on the basis of existing agreements– such as the May 24, 1964 Indo-Naga ceasefire agreement and the six rounds of Prime Minister-level talks held in Delhi between February 18, 1966 and October 7, 1967– the Centre continues to pursue its own interests, disregarding the rights and lives of the Naga people. NNC/FGN also claimed that continued militarisation, enabled by laws such as AFSPA, undermines democratic and humanitarian values.
Despite various agreements with Naga Political Groups (NPGs) recognising the political nature of the issue, it alleged that the Centre has failed to honour such commitments. It added that the proposed aerial radar installation was another move that could undermine the rights and freedom of the Naga people.
NNC/FGN stated that the Nagas cannot view the proposed installation as merely a defensive measure in their interest, but rather as another step towards increasing militarisation. It warned that such infrastructure could transform community areas into zones of surveillance and strategic activity, while also affecting daily life by creating a sense of insecurity and psychological stress.
Given its location in a border region, it cautioned that the installation of such equipment could turn public spaces into vulnerable points, potentially exposing the area to risks similar to conflict-prone regions like the Middle East.
In view of these concerns, NNC/FGN stressed that the proposal requires careful deliberation and collective responsibility, as it impacts not only political issues but also the everyday lives of people. It called for informed public dialogue and vigilant assessment, asserting that decisions of such magnitude should not be taken without the consent of the Naga people. It further maintained that the issue goes beyond the installation of a radar system, and concerns the broader direction of Naga society– whether towards increased militarisation or towards the aspiration for freedom and dignity.
