Calls for stronger conservation measures
Konyak Union (KU) has expressed appreciation to the Environment, Forest & Climate Change (EF&CC) department under the leadership of minister CL John, for the inauguration of the Mon wildlife division at Mon headquarters on April 21, 2026.
In a press release, KU president K Yamao Konyak and general secretary Wango Konyak described the establishment of the new wildlife division as a significant step towards strengthening wildlife protection and forest governance in Mon district.
KU noted that Mon was endowed with rich forest cover and biodiversity but continued to face serious wildlife-related challenges.
It welcomed the department’s emphasis on community participation in conservation efforts. While appreciating the initiative, KU urged the department to intensify public sensitization programmes on wildlife preservation and environmental protection, as awareness levels in the district remained limited.
The union also commended the department’s recent inspections in reserve forest areas, including the ecologically important Singphan wildlife sanctuary, which serves as a vital elephant corridor connecting Nagaland and Assam.
However, KU expressed serious concern over increasing threats such as encroachment, illegal logging, and other unchecked human activities that were disturbing the ecological balance of the reserved forests.
In this regard, the union has appealed to the state government to take urgent measures, including deployment of adequate forest personnel, strengthening of protection infrastructure, and improvement of connectivity and basic facilities for effective monitoring and patrolling.
Further, KU reiterated its appeal for a joint on-site review involving all stakeholders to ensure timely and practical interventions.
The union urged the state government to consider its proposal for a “Green Corridor” and other environment-friendly initiatives for long-term conservation of the region’s forests and wildlife. The union has reaffirmed its commitment to cooperate with the EF&CC department in safeguarding the forest and wildlife resources for the benefit of present and future generations.
