Trinamool Worker Shot by Masked Gunmen in Halisahar

A shocking incident occurred in Halisahar, a locality in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district, where a Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker was shot at by masked individuals on a motorcycle. This attack on Prosenjit Maulik, also known as Raja, took place on the final day of campaigning, instigating significant political tension as the second phase of voting approaches. Police reports confirm that the worker sustained serious injuries and was promptly admitted to Kalyani JNM Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

According to eyewitness accounts, Raja was standing on Misri Pukur Road in Ward No. 9 on Monday night when he was targeted by the assailants. They fired a total of three shots, with one bullet striking Raja in the stomach while the other two hit his mobile phone, possibly saving his life. Following the attack, locals rushed to his aid and transported him to a nearby hospital.

The incident has led to heightened tensions in the area as accusations fly between the Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). TMC candidate Subodh Adhikari claims that this violence reflects the BJP’s culture of intimidation, asserting that the miscreants acted out of fear of an impending defeat. In contrast, BJP candidate Sudipta Das has dismissed these allegations, suggesting that the attackers may instead be affiliated with TMC and that internal conflicts within the party could be a motive for the shooting. The police have launched an investigation and are pursuing leads to apprehend the attackers as the political atmosphere intensifies ahead of the upcoming assembly elections.
