DIMAPUR: Thahekhu Village Council (TVC) has announced a stringent ban on extraction of sand, gravel, boulders and other resources from riverbeds and streams within its jurisdiction, effective June 1, 2026 until further notice.
In a press release, TVC chairman Mughavi Chishi and secretary Inato Yepthomi stated that the decision supplements earlier resolutions of GBs and Village Council as well as State Government directives. The council cautioned that rampant extraction has led to soil erosion, flooding of settlements along riverbanks, environmental degradation, damage to bridges and other public infrastructure, besides adversely affecting agricultural activities.
TVC informed that it will strictly monitor the entire stretch of Dhansiri River flowing through Thahekhu and enforce the ban in totality. It warned that any machinery found within the riverbanks or riverbeds from June 1 onwards would be seized and defaulters penalized as deemed fit. The announcement was formally declared by head GB K. Kakheho Yepthomi during the general public meeting held on April 18.
