India is rapidly emerging as a global hub for Medical Value Travel (MVT), with the government projecting the sector to grow from $8.7 billion in 2025 to nearly $16.2 billion by 2030. The global MVT market, valued at $115.6 billion in 2022, is expected to reach $286.1 billion by 2030 at a CAGR of 10.8%. Rising healthcare costs, long waiting times, and lifestyle diseases are driving patients abroad, and India’s integration of advanced medical infrastructure with traditional wellness systems like AYUSH has positioned it strongly. Policy support, digital facilitation, and initiatives such as the AYUSH Visa and Regional Medical Hubs are further strengthening the ecosystem, combining curative medical tourism with wellness tourism rooted in Yoga and Ayurveda.
In 2025, India recorded 9.15 million foreign tourist arrivals, with over 5 lakh visiting for medical treatment, making up 5.5% of total arrivals. Bangladesh led the source countries, followed by Iraq, Uzbekistan, Somalia, Turkmenistan, Oman, and Kenya. India ranked 10th globally in the Medical Tourism Index 2020–21 and fifth among Asia-Pacific wellness destinations. Hospitals across the country adhere to NABH accreditation standards, ensuring internationally recognized quality and patient safety. Looking ahead, the Union Budget 2026–27 has proposed five Regional Medical Hubs with integrated medical, educational, and research facilities, including AYUSH centres, to further boost India’s standing in the global medical tourism market.
