As many as 49 constituent units of the Lotha Students’ Union (LSU) have expressed strong opposition to the joint statement issued by Lotha frontal organisations on March 29, 2026, declaring the LSU election (2026-2029) as legitimate.
In a press communiqué, the aggrieved units stated that the declaration was made without prior consultation, proper deliberation or a fact-finding process, and maintained that LSU, being an autonomous body governed by its own constitution, would not accept the statement.
The units alleged that the election was conducted “illegally” with participation from only 43 out of 90 affiliated units, without a valid electoral college, thereby violating the LSU constitution and election code of conduct. They termed the endorsement by frontal bodies as “biased, divisive and detrimental” to the union’s integrity.
Raising specific concerns, the units accused the election commission of undermining legitimate representation by rejecting authorised representatives of certain student unions while allegedly accepting unauthorised individuals. They also alleged unconstitutional disqualification of five candidates for key posts, and questioned the declaration of some candidates as elected despite not being part of the electoral college.
Further, the units criticised the disqualification of a vice-presidential candidate on alleged moral grounds, terming it arbitrary and outside constitutional provisions. It also pointed to lapses in electoral transparency, alleging that voter identification mechanisms were ignored and unauthorised individuals were allowed to vote.
The units stated that they had submitted a boycott letter on March 12, 2026, and subsequently convened an Extraordinary Emergency Assembly on March 20, where the house unanimously declared the election process null and void and referred the matter to the Naga Students’ Federation for intervention.
Reaffirming their stand, the units declared non-cooperation with the “unconstitutionally formed group” and said they would not recognise its tenure. They urged all concerned, including government agencies, organisations and the media, not to acknowledge the group until a final decision was delivered.
The units also appealed to the NSF to intervene at the earliest to safeguard the LSU office and ensure a fair resolution, asserting that they would abide by its judgment.
