With the implementation of the Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) Scheme across Nagaland, the Department of Labour has made medical arrangements with the Health & Family Welfare Department to facilitate healthcare services for insured persons and their dependants.
According to Labour Commissioner-cum-CEO, ESI Scheme, Kohima, Avile Vitso, medical services will be provided through identified PHCs, CHCs and District Hospitals in the newly covered nine districts—Mon, Tuensang, Noklak, Shamator, Longleng, Kiphire, Phek, Meluri and Peren. He stated that the arrangement was made to ensure beneficiaries avail both primary and secondary healthcare services.
The ESI Scheme, administered by the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, is designed to protect employees against sickness, maternity, disablement and death due to employment injury, while also providing medical care to insured persons and their families. Apart from medical services, the scheme offers cash benefits to insured persons.
The scheme applies to employees in factories and establishments such as road transport, hotels, restaurants, cinemas, newspapers, shops and private medical/educational institutions where 10 or more persons are employed and drawing wages up to Rs. 21,000 per month. Employers and proprietors of coverable establishments are required to register their establishments and employees under the ESI Scheme.
