Massive tree collapse damages Dimapur Club property

Staff ReporterDIMAPUR, MAY 3 (NPN):

A massive tree was uprooted inside the premises of Dimapur Club along Midland Road-Forest Colony road, causing extensive damage to the boundary wall, drainage system, footpath and nearby utility wires.
The tree collapsed within the compound, bringing down large sections of the boundary wall and scattering debris across the area. Despite the scale of destruction, no casualties or injuries were reported.
According to sources, the uprooted tree also damaged several utility wires running through the site. The impact severely affected the underground drainage line, while the adjoining footpath was cracked and partially destroyed. Broken concrete slabs, exposed roots and damaged pavement were visible, with sections of the collapsed wall lying amid heaps of soil and debris.
The affected stretch outside the Dimapur Club boundary forms part of the “A Better Dimapur” project, an urban beautification initiative launched in 2019. The site, once used as an open dumping area despite restrictions, had been adopted and developed by Inner Wheel Club Dimapur (IWCD) and Rotary Club Dimapur (RCD) to promote cleanliness and improve the city’s appearance.
Over the years, the initiative had transformed the location into a cleaner and more visually appealing public space, often cited as an example of community-driven civic improvement.
However, residents of the area expressed concern that the site continues to face the persistent problem of garbage dumping. They said repeated complaints regarding indiscriminate disposal of waste outside the Dimapur Club premises have not been effectively addressed by the authorities.
Residents further pointed out that littering by commuters and passersby remains rampant, with people travelling in vehicles, including motorcyclists, frequently seen throwing garbage along the roadside. This, they said, has undermined sustained efforts to maintain cleanliness and preserve the beautified stretch.
They have urged the concerned authorities to take stricter measures to prevent dumping and ensure proper maintenance of the area.
