Nagaland Governor reviews monsoon preparedness

DIMAPUR, MAY 4 (NPN)

Nagaland governor, Nand Kishore Yadav, who chaired a review meeting on monsoon preparedness at the Naga Bhavan Conference Hall, Lok Bhavan, Kohima on Monday, called for timely response to emergencies and effective dissemination of information to the public.
Governor also emphasised the need for coordinated efforts among all departments. He directed all responsible agencies to remain vigilant and ensure that necessary measures were in place to minimize disruption during the monsoon.
Home Commissioner, Abhijit Sinha, presented a detailed overview of the monsoon outlook for 2026. Sinha highlighted that while India could experience below-normal rainfall due to likely El Niño conditions, Nagaland was expected to receive normal to above-normal rainfall with intense and uneven distribution.
The presentation also outlined key risks including flash floods, landslides and erratic rainfall patterns.
At the meeting, departments also shared district-wise preparedness plans, including the establishment of control rooms, deployment of machinery, and identification of vulnerable road stretches.
PWD informed that all National Highways and major roads were being closely monitored, with alternative routes identified to ensure connectivity during emergencies.
The department informed that maintenance works such as drainage clearance, slope stabilization and pre-positioning of resources were being undertaken across divisions.
Kohima district administration presented its action plan, including constitution of task forces, traffic management strategies, medical preparedness and ensuring adequate supply of essential commodities during the monsoon season.
Senior officials from NSDMA, PWD, NHIDCL, district administration and SEWAK attended the meeting.

Review meeting with social welfare department: Governor also held a review meeting with the department of social welfare and appreciated the efforts of the department in implementing welfare schemes and reaching beneficiaries across the state.
Yadav stressed the need to further strengthen implementation, enhance public awareness, and improve inter-departmental coordination to ensure effective delivery of services.
On issues concerning persons with disabilities, the governor suggested organizing block-wise and village-level camps in coordination with the health & family welfare department for the issuance of disability certificates, enabling eligible individuals to access government benefits.
During the meeting, social welfare director, Tosheli Zhimomi, presented a comprehensive overview of key programmes and initiatives being implemented across the State. The presentation highlighted major schemes under the ministry of women and child development, including Saksham Anganwadi & Poshan 2.0, Mission Vatsalya, and Mission Shakti, with a focus on nutrition, child protection, and women’s empowerment.
The meeting also reviewed initiatives under the ministry of social justice and empowerment and the ministry of rural development, covering programmes for senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups. Progress in child protection mechanisms, including child welfare committees, juvenile justice boards, and child helpline services, was discussed in detail.
