DIMAPUR: A sensitisation programme on installation of Smart Meters and Rooftop Solar Systems under the Nagaland Solar Mission was organised by the district administration Akuluto in collaboration with the Power Department, Akuluto subdivision, at the ADC’s office on May 6. The programme was attended by government officials, CSOs, and public leaders of Akuluto town.
Officials from the Power Department highlighted the benefits of smart meter installation, including real-time accurate power usage data, transparent billing, and improved energy management to reduce costs. Participants were also sensitised on the importance of grid-connected rooftop solar systems for residential houses, which can generate electricity for homes, avail central and state subsidies, monetise excess power, reduce electricity bills, and enjoy free vendor maintenance for five years. It was informed that subsidies are directly transferred to beneficiaries’ bank accounts.
Addressing the gathering, ADC Akuluto, Tiayanger Jamir, encouraged public leaders to obtain correct information from the department and disseminate it to the people to dispel skepticism. He stressed that in a power-deficit state like Nagaland, such initiatives should be appreciated rather than criticised, and this could be achieved only when accurate information reaches the grassroots.
Public leaders urged the department to organise more sensitisation programmes for the general public to ensure wider acceptance of development initiatives, particularly in the power sector. Power Department, Akuluto subdivision, expressed its commitment to extend support through capacity-building and sensitisation measures so that these initiatives benefit every corner of the subdivision in the long run.
