BJP victory in Bengal and Assam will not be replicated in Meghalaya : NPP leader

Shillong, May 6: Meghalaya Sports and Youth Affairs Minister and senior National People’s Party (NPP) leader, Wailadmiki Shylla said that the BJP’s landslide victory in West Bengal and Assam would not necessarily be replicated in Meghalaya.
“From what I can understand and see, the people still trust the NPP under the able leadership of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma. No one can deny the kind of development in the past few years under the leadership of the Chief Minister and both the Deputy Chief Ministers (Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar),” Shylla said.
“I am fully confident that people will definitely be with us and give us the opportunity to serve them in the future,” the NPP leader asserted.
The BJP is a minor partner in the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government.
Expressing doubts over BJP’s claims that it would lead the government in the State after the 2028 Assembly elections, Shylla said, “We have different perspectives. They (BJP) have their own way of looking at it. A BJP-led government is not impossible but it will be a challenge.”
Moreover, he said that the two BJP MLAs won their seats on the strength of their personal capacity, not because of the party.
Senior BJP leader Alexander Laloo Hek maintained that the saffron party will be leading the government in 2028 after the assembly polls.
“Several political leaders in the state have expressed interest in joining BJP after seeing the performance of our party in West Bengal and Assam. I am sure that people in Meghalaya too want development which other BJP-ruled states are enjoying the fruits of development,” Hek said.
