IRCS organises ‘Walk for Humanity’

Correspondent – KOHIMA, MAY 8 (NPN): Indian Red Cross Society Nagaland (IRCSN) organised a walkathon under the theme “Walk for Humanity” on Friday to mark World Red Cross Day commemorating the 198th birth anniversary of Henry Dunant, founder of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
The walkathon witnesses participation from people across different walks of life. Deputy Commissioner Kohima and president, IRCS Kohima Branch, B. Henok Buchem, flagged off the walkathon from Red Cross Complex. Prior to the event, Nagaland Fitness and Body Building Association conducted a warm up session, while NBCC secretary social concern, Dr. Villo Naleo, pronounced the invocation prayer.
At the culmination programme held at Old NST junction, MLA of 9 Kohima Town A/C, Dr. Tseilhoutuo Ato Rhütso, spoke on the significance of humanity. He noted that while the world faces conflict and suffering, society also has the means and opportunities to help those in need.
Recalling Henry Dunant’s humanitarian spirit during the Battle of Solferino in 1859, Rhütso emphasized that humanity transcends religion, age and race, and requires compassion and service.
He remarked that the walk from Red Cross building to Old NST point could mark the beginning of humanitarian service for many youngsters, while for senior citizens and the Red Cross Society, it represents the continuation of a long standing commitment.
Encouraging participants to practise humanity in everyday life, he cites honesty in business dealings and helping classmates in need as practical demonstrations of humanitarian values.
Rhütso urged participants not to let the spirit of the walk end with the programme but to continue serving humanity in homes, communities and society irrespective of background. He highlighted the significance of Kohima hosting the event, noting the participation of people from diverse tribes and religions, and expresses hope that it inspires confidence and motivates others to help one another.
Earlier, the closing programme was chaired by convenor of the organising committee, Khyo TCK. Welcome address and introduction were delivered by IRCSN general secretary, Akhale Khamo, while IRCSN vice chairman, Dr. R. Rose Chakhesang, proposed the vote of thanks.
