East Bengal stay on top of ISL table after exciting draw with Punjab FC

KOLKATA, MAY 11 (AGENCIES): East Bengal FC maintained their position at the summit of the Indian Super League (ISL) table after a pulsating 0-0 draw against Punjab FC at the Salt Lake Stadium on Monday. The result left the Kolkata giants with 22 points from 11 matches, though their lead remains precarious with Mohun Bagan Super Giant poised to overtake them should they defeat Inter Kashi on Tuesday.
The contest defied the usual narrative of a goalless draw, producing 29 attempts on goal and constant drama. Both sides struck the woodwork three times, and East Bengal goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Gill emerged as the standout performer, keeping his team in contention with a string of crucial saves. His heroics ensured East Bengal’s title hopes remain alive, even as Punjab FC showcased their rapid improvement this season.
Punjab FC began brightly, with Samir Zelkovic testing Gill early and Daniel Ramirez rattling the upright from distance. Ricky Shabong’s clever ball to Manglenthang Kipgen nearly broke the deadlock, but Gill denied the effort. Punjab’s attacking triangles on the left, involving Muhammed Uvais, Nsungusi Effiong, and Ramirez, repeatedly unsettled East Bengal’s defense.
East Bengal struggled to contain Punjab’s midfield surges, with skipper Souvik Chakrabarti booked for a poor challenge on Ramirez before being substituted in the 22nd minute. His replacement, Jeakson Singh, helped stabilize the midfield, though Punjab continued to press.
Miguel Ferreira, returning from suspension, provided flashes of creativity, threading a fine pass to Bipin Singh only for Arshdeep Singh to narrow the angle. Ferreira himself was booked for simulation before half-time, highlighting East Bengal’s frustrations.
Punjab FC resumed their dominance after the break, forcing Gill into three rapid saves: cutting out Effiong’s ball, tipping away Shami’s bouncing header, and thwarting Zelkovic’s chip after Ramirez’s clever assist. Central defenders Kevin Sibille and Anwar Ali, alongside Gill, were East Bengal’s most reliable performers during this phase.
The final quarter saw East Bengal finally assert themselves. Ferreira’s snap left-footer grazed the upright, while Mohamad Basim’s audacious 40-yard strike clipped the crossbar. The Brazilian playmaker nearly capped the night with a spectacular back-heel attempt, but the ball sailed over, leaving the crowd of 17,000 gasping.
Despite their late surge, East Bengal could not find the breakthrough, and the match ended with both sides rueing missed opportunities.
The draw keeps East Bengal marginally ahead in the ISL standings, but Mohun Bagan’s upcoming fixture against Inter Kashi could reshape the title race. With the Kolkata derby looming on Saturday, the result against Punjab FC may prove pivotal in determining the eventual champion.
