Wall Collapse After Heavy Rain Kills Eight-Year-Old Girl in Karnataka

Yadgir (Karnataka), May 12 (IANS): An eight-year-old girl identified as Akshata was killed after the kitchen wall of a house belonging to Siddappa collapsed following heavy rainfall on Monday in Tumakuru village, Vadagera taluk, Yadgir district of Karnataka, police said on Tuesday. Akshata was playing in the hall along with other girls when the wall fell on them, killing her on the spot while two other children sustained injuries and were shifted to the Yadgir Institute of Medical Sciences (YIMS) for treatment. Yadgir Deputy Commissioner Harshal Bhoyar and Superintendent of Police Pruthwik Shankar visited the spot on Tuesday, and the jurisdictional Vadagera police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident.

The tragedy adds to a growing list of rain-related disasters in Karnataka in recent months. In April, heavy rains and severe weather in Bengaluru caused the collapse of an eight-foot compound wall near Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital, resulting in seven deaths including three children, with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah ordering a high-level investigation and announcing Rs 5 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased. Separate rain-related incidents on April 27 resulted in at least two additional deaths in BTM Layout and Whitefield due to electrocution and wall failure. In another incident on July 26, 2025, one woman identified as Sushma died and four others including three children were injured after a wall collapsed at Hanagallu in Somwarpet taluk in Madikeri, with the deceased having been a resident of Afzalpur in Kalburgi who was living in a rented house with her husband, brother, and three children.
