Monsoon preparedness meet held in Dimapur

DIMAPUR: The first quarterly pre‑monsoon preparedness meeting of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Dimapur, was held on May 13 at the conference hall of the deputy commissioner’s office, Purana Bazar, Dimapur.
According to DIPR report, the meeting was chaired by deputy commissioner and chairman, DDMA Dimapur, Dr. Tinojongshi Chang, who thanked line departments for their cooperation in disaster preparedness and response. Highlighting recurring flood problems in the district, Dr. Chang recalled last year’s severe flood situation and expressed gratitude to Assam Rifles and SDRF for their timely assistance. He assured that shortages of medicines, manpower or inventory would be taken up with the government and stressed the importance of public awareness on waste management and flood prevention.
Nodal officer, DDMA Dimapur, Inaka, said lessons had been learned from last year’s floods, pointing out that garbage dumping into drains was a major cause of flooding. He urged departments to coordinate with colony leaders to identify relief camps in advance.
Health & Family Welfare department reported availability of manpower and ambulances but sought proper storage facilities and additional medical supplies. Assam Rifles informed that two columns were on standby, while SDRF officials said personnel were trained but required more manpower and equipment. Food & Civil Supplies assured no shortage of food, and Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) reported cleaning of drains and streams, though it stressed that public cooperation was crucial. Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industries (DCCI) also assured sufficient food items in the market.
Dr. Chang informed that the chief secretary would visit Dimapur on May 18 to inspect disaster‑prone areas and announced a social work programme next Saturday as part of preparedness activities.
Officials from various departments, agencies and stakeholders attended the meeting and discussed measures for emergency response and inter‑departmental coordination to tackle possible monsoon‑related disasters.
