NEET-UG re-exam on June 21: Dharmendra Pradhan

Says computer-based test from next year

NEW DELHI, MAY 15 (PTI): Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Friday announced that the NEET-UG re-examination will be held on June 21 and said the medical entrance exam would be conducted as a computer-based test from next year as part of reforms following allegations of irregularities.
Addressing a press conference, Pradhan said students’ future remained the government’s top priority and asserted that there would be “zero tolerance” for irregularities in the conduct of NEET-UG. He said strict action was being taken.
The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate), conducted on May 3, was cancelled following allegations of irregularities in the examination process. Pradhan informed that the duration of the re-test had been extended by 15 minutes and candidates would be allowed to choose their preferred test cities again. Admit cards would be issued by June 14, he said.
He also said the Centre would coordinate transport arrangements for students with state governments.
“Our topmost priority is the future of the students. I want to appeal to society, especially to all students, to appear for the examination without fear. The government stands with you. We will not let malpractice happen this time,” he said.
“We did not want any mafia conspiracy or money power to snatch away your seat. That is why we had to take a tough decision,” the minister added.
Pradhan said that after irregularities surfaced previously, the Radhakrishnan Committee was constituted and its recommendations implemented. “Despite that, this incident occurred. Therefore, our first step was to cancel the examination,” he said. Warning those attempting to disrupt the process, he said: “To those creating fear and disturbances, stay away from the upcoming examination process. Otherwise, they will have to face punishment.”
The minister said the issue came to light after objections were received through the NTA grievance redressal system regarding alleged overlaps with “guess papers”, following which a preliminary inquiry was initiated. Pradhan added that discussions were immediately held and the matter was later handed over to the concerned agencies of the Government of India.
