IPL: Kishan, Cummins power SRH into playoffs

CHENNAI, MAY 18 (PTI): Sunrisers Hyderabad secured their place in the IPL 2026 playoffs with a convincing five-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk on Monday. The victory was shaped by a fluent innings from Ishan Kishan, who scored 70 off 47 balls, and a decisive spell from skipper Pat Cummins, who claimed three wickets for 28 runs.
Chennai, opting to bat first, managed 180 for seven, a total built on contributions from Dewald Brevis (44 off 27 balls) and Shivam Dube (26), who added 59 runs for the fifth wicket. Earlier, Sanju Samson gave CSK a fiery start, smashing Nitish Kumar Reddy and Praful Hinge for a flurry of boundaries. However, Cummins struck in the third over to dismiss Samson, and later removed Kartik Sharma (32) and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad (15), ensuring CSK’s progress was repeatedly checked. Brevis, who had struggled for form this season, finally found his range with powerful strokes, but his promising innings was cut short by Eshan Malinga’s 141 kmph delivery, which shattered his stumps.
In reply, SRH’s chase began shakily with the early dismissal of Travis Head and a slow knock from Abhishek Sharma (26 off 21 balls), leaving them at 45 for one after the Powerplay. The momentum shifted when Heinrich Klaasen (47 off 26 balls) joined Kishan. Their 75-run stand changed the complexion of the game, as they attacked CSK’s spinners with sharp footwork and aggressive shot-making. Kishan reached his half-century in 37 balls, and though Klaasen fell to a sharp stumping by Samson off Noor Ahmad, Kishan carried on with authority, striking seven fours and three sixes.
Kishan’s innings provided the backbone of the chase, and even though he was dismissed by Anshul Kamboj with just six runs needed, SRH comfortably reached the target in 19 overs, finishing at 181 for five. The win lifted SRH to 16 points, confirming their playoff berth with a game to spare. The result also ensured Gujarat Titans’ qualification, as they too sit on 16 points. Royal Challengers Bengaluru, with 18 points, had already sealed their place, leaving only one playoff spot open for other contenders.
For CSK, the defeat was a setback, but they remain mathematically in contention with 12 points from 13 matches. They will need to win their final league game and depend on other results to keep their hopes alive.
This match highlighted SRH’s balance between disciplined bowling and aggressive batting. Cummins’ control over pace and length dismantled CSK’s top order, while Kishan’s fluent strokeplay ensured the chase was completed with composure. Klaasen’s enterprising knock added further strength to the middle order, and together they carried Hyderabad into the playoffs.
The victory not only underlined SRH’s consistency this season but also reshaped the playoff picture, leaving CSK and other teams to battle for the lone remaining spot.
Brief Scores: Chennai Super Kings 180/7 in 20 overs (Kartik Sharma 32, Dewald Brevis 44; Pat Cummins 3/28) lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad 181/5 in 19 overs (Ishan Kishan 70, Heinrich Klaasen 47; Mukesh Choudhary 2/36) by 5 wickets.
