DIMAPUR, MAY 20 (NPN): In a major pre-monsoon initiative to prevent urban flooding, the Dimapur Urban Council Chairmen Federation (DUCCF) and GB Union (Dimapur Sardar) on Wednesday launched a 10-day drainage cleaning drive across Dimapur under the aegis of the district administration and in coordination with the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA).
Speaking to this reporter, DUCCF president Zasivikho Zakiesato said the drive aimed at ensuring free flow of drainage systems and mitigating recurring waterlogging issues during the monsoon season.
As per the plan, six teams have been constituted to cover different localities in a systematic manner: Team-1 to cover areas from East Block Colony to Nagarjan Police Point; Team-2 from SM Colony to Nagarjan Police Point; Team-3 to cover UNB (B), Rainbow Colony, Niu Colony, and Zakiesato Colony (New Field Checkgate); Team-4 to cover Zakiesato Colony, Public Ground Colony, K. Punyu Colony, Lake View Colony, Khermahal (Tata Parking), and NST Colony (CHCSS); Team-5 will cover Lakeview Colony, Notun Basti, Riverbelt Colony, and Duncan Basti and Team-6 will operate in Aokong Colony and Lengrijan.
Zakiesato said debris nets would also be installed beneath bridges to trap waste materials for proper disposal, while colony councils would erect signboards warning residents against dumping waste into drains and waterways.
He further informed that advisor for labour & employment, skill development & entrepreneurship and excise Moatoshi Longkumer, visited some of the cleaning sites and encouraged the teams to continue their efforts. The advisor also stressed the importance of public awareness and proper waste disposal practices, particularly around bridges and drainage channels.
Meanwhile, Zakiesato informed that a medical camp for workers involved in the drainage cleaning exercise would be organised after completion of the drive.
