DIMAPUR, MAY 21 (NPN): Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) on Thursday intensified its sanitation and flood-prevention drive by undertaking large-scale drainage cleaning operations across several colonies in Dimapur to prevent waterlogging during the monsoon season.
The exercise, led by DMC chairman Hukheto Yepthomi, entered its third consecutive day with workers desilting drains, clearing accumulated garbage and restoring blocked drainage channels in vulnerable areas.
The drive covered localities under Team-II sectors, including Midland Colony, Westyard Colony, Lower Manipuri Colony, Chatteswari Colony, K Sachu Colony, Hill View Colony, Kyong Colony, Residency Colony, Landmark Colony, Kevijau Colony, SEFTI Colony, Rio Colony, Sewak Colony, Dhobinalla, Marwari Patti and Netaji Colony.
Large quantities of plastic waste, sludge and stagnant water were removed from heavily clogged drains, particularly in Midland Colony, where overflowing drains and unhygienic conditions had triggered public concern. According to DMC, the initiative was part of an ongoing urban drainage restoration programme aimed at improving sanitation, ensuring smooth water flow and reducing health risks during the rainy season.
Residents welcomed the initiative and urged the public to refrain from dumping waste into drains and waterways. DMC also appealed for greater community participation in maintaining cleanliness and preventing future blockage of drainage systems.
